Chapter Seventeen

EMBER

“So, you met Wolf not long ago?” Wolf’s mother, Theodora, asks me politely as we sit at the table together. Wolf had gone off somewhere with Sloan, Maverick, and Asa, leaving me on my own for a few minutes. Not that it bothered me. The man was nothing if not attentive. He had only left my side to get my drink earlier and that had been it.

To say I am enjoying the attention from him is an understatement. He hasn’t so much as looked at the other women trying to get his attention the entire night. I had received more glares and catty comments than I have before at these kinds of events. Not that it bothers me. I can give back as good as I get. Besides, the best part is knowing that none of those bitches get to take him home tonight.

That’s all for me.

His mother is in her late fifties but still looks like she’s about forty. The woman’s skin is so smooth and wrinkle-free that I wonder if she ever smiles. The only feature that I can see of Wolf is the dark eyes. But that’s about where the similarity ends. She’s a petite woman, with a very slim figure and a full pair of breasts that no doubt was paid for by David. Tonight, she’s wearing a royal red ballgown covered in gold accents, along with diamonds in her ears, around her neck, and on her wrist. She looks very regal and perfectly matches the theme.

And from the way she’s watching me, I’m just a lowly peasant in this situation.

I smile back at her and reply, “Yes. Only a week or so. We live right across the hall from each other.”

“Yes, David said as much,” she replied. I see the cool judgment in her gaze. Hmm, okay, so I haven’t won over his mother then. “He also said you own a bar?”

She says bar like it’s a strip club.

“Yes, I do,” I say, meeting her gaze, letting her know that I’m not the least bit ashamed or intimidated. “We’re doing quite well for being open for less than a year.”

“Yes, Trent did say he checked it out and it was cute and quaint kind of place.” I resist the urge to remind her that he had been too drunk the two times he had shown up to get a good look at it. Instead, I say nothing. “And you and Wolf are dating?” she asks me.

“Yes. Though it’s very new so we’re just getting to know each other right now,” I tell her with a smile. “He is a very good man.”

“Mmm, yes he is,” she says, but there is no pride in her eyes as she speaks about her son. “I’m hoping that he’ll give up his silly obsession with defacing people’s skin and come to work for David. David has already offered him a position but my son is stubborn. Once he does, he’ll hopefully find a proper match and settle down. Not that you’re not lovely, dear, but you’re no Ash Lincoln.
